Hi guys,

In this article I am going to tell you guys how to add Desktop effects to your ubuntu Desktop. This can be done by using COMPIZ, which is an OpenGL application used to render visual effects to your Linux Desktop. To install Compiz Desktop Effects all you need to know is how to use your Synaptic Package manager which you can learn here.

To install compiz, you need to download two packages and its dependents.
  1. Goto Synaptic Package Manager.
  2. Click on Search.
  3. Type in Compiz. You'll be presented with many results.
  4. You need to install "compiz" and "compizconfig-settings-manager" as shown below.

Now that you have installed Compiz, you need to know how to work with this. I'll teach you on how to activate one of the famous effects in compiz, and from there i guess you can explore compiz yourself.

  1. Goto System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Settings.
  2. You should get a window as seen below.

  3. Here choose the Desktop Cube Option as shown in the image. (Just click on the Checkbox).
  4. Now try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Right Arrow (or) Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow.
  5. You should get the cube effect when you switch between Workspaces.

Well., now that you have insalled Compiz, I guess its time for you to go about it and explore it. Happy Ubuntu-ing!!
