Tired of searching the internet for a software?
Tired of fake softwares and Sharewares?
Linux has a one-stop-shop for almost all recognised OpenSource softwares. Linux calls this place The Synaptic Package Manager.
Wonder what it is??
Here we go,..
Synaptic Package Manager is actually a place where you can search for any OpenSource software and download them. You neednt follow any procedure to download and install these files!! It takes care of things automatically!!
Where do I find Synaptic Package Manager?
Just goto System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
To install any Software you need to be in the SuperUser mode. So the Synaptic Package Manager asks for a Password.
Once you have entered the password you will find a screen with the menus.
Now choose Settings -> Preferences.
Click on Repositories Tab.
A repository put in simple words is a place from where you can download the files.
Here you can check all the 4 Check Boxes. This means you are allowing Synaptic to check all available repositories for a software search.
Now click Ok.
In the Toolbar, Click on the Search button.
Enter the name of the Software you want to search.
Click Search.
Now browse through the Search Results. When you identify the required software click on the check box.
A context-sensitive menu appears.
Choose "Mark for Installation"
In the toolbar click "Apply" button!!
The Software is downloaded and installed!!
This process of downloading and installing a sofware can also be done using the terminal. This is done using the apt-get command.
Synaptic Package Manager is a GUI version of doing it!!
